KIDS’ LAND ART SYMPOSIUM 2017
The idea of a Land Art symposium for children came during last year’s Land Art Symposium ‘Pura Natura’ hosted by the campsite Sotto il Faggio and organized by Carla Cremers and Tegi Canfari. Led by Claudia Borgna and inspired by the artworks created during that occasion, the children of the campsite from observers and assistants became artists themselves. So why not create an official ‘Kids’ Land Art symposium where kids can express their own vision of how to relate to our/their natural environment?
Experimental and open to improvisation, the fundamental concept of this project aims at a creative experience harmonious with the marvellous nature of the Maritime Alps. Agnese and Gian Luca Scapin have invited Claudia Borgna to be the artist in residence at the camping site Sotto il Faggio. During the first week of August, Claudia will assist youngsters apply their creative abilities, whether observational, philosophical, analytical, practical or manual. Natural materials foraged on site will be transformed by the children into temporary site-specific en plein-air sculptures. A final presentation open to the public will narrate their shared creative adventure. By becoming responsible interdependent active subjects, the children will educate us adults to set the missing example of how the world should really be! Culture and nature, not separate and conflicting but rather harmonious, and above all interdependent entities.
Dedicated to the most majestic and trustworthy teacher, nature, this occasion will celebrate nature and the new generations that it will host. By opening up their space to art and culture, Campeggio Sotto il Faggio will offer an experience that will hopefully bring culture a step closer to nature: we have a long way to go.
KIDS’ LAND ART SYMPOSIUM 2018
In Tune
The aim of this project is to set throughout the camping site a series of sound sculptures that will all come together into a final Drum Circle performance. Coined by 60’ USA counterculture, Drum Circles are informal music gatherings inclusive of all types of instruments and free of hierarchical systems. Offering a rare space of equality and freedom their rhythm seek a group consciousness that is in harmony with one another, with ourselves and in this case with the surrounding natural environment.
Ephemeral sculptures, the musical instruments will be inspired by the local flora and fauna and built with natural materials collected on the campsite. The making process will hopefully challenge us to discover, invent and experiment with shapes and materials, with our imagination, and with sounds that might well be new to us or perhaps different from known musical instruments.
The Drum Circle’s performance will bring everybody together into a final sensory experience that voices the kids’ creativity while connecting environmental, cultural and sensorial bodies in a sort of collective spiritual magnetic resonance.

…I AM AN ECO PUNK, AND YOU?
To manifest and share ideas, art is the discipline of image, object and concept-making through communication: the expression of one’s very own creativity. It is vital for each human being to discover, explore, experiment and express their own inner voice early on in their life so to better harmonise with nature. – Claudia Borgna
Description:
This year Kids’ Land Art Symposium focus will be learning how to use tools and build with wood.
In past Land Art Symposiums, kids created ephemeral visual and musical compositions inspired by the Camping natural surroundings. Focusing on their observational skills, they assembled natural materials together experimenting with simple techniques, like tying, stacking, shaping balancing, hanging, collaging, displaying and decorating.
This year’s challenge will be tinkering using real tools instead!
Where:
Campeggio Sotto Il Faggio – Reception Area
When:
13-18 August, 3-6PM
Process:
In a 5 days long workshop the kids will learn the basic skills of how to use: saw, hammer, screwdriver, mitre box, plier, ruler, hot glue gun drill and jigsaw. Applying creativity to problem solving, kids will experience making, individually (small wooden objects), and collaboratively (larger project).
Goals:
- To realise and develop the strength that “lies in our own hands” by being mindful of nature.
- To build self awareness (self esteem, self worth, self belief, self trust) by unleashing creativity.
- An exploration not just off tools and materials, but of the kids’ inner self abilities.
Rules and General Mindset:
Safety is the only rule. There are no rights or wrongs in making!
An attitude of respect and responsibly towards: self and others, tools and materials, bodies and peers, and towards the overall environment, are the foundational principles for building a safe space and a culture of safety where trial & error, and yes, failing, are not only welcomed, but encouraged and supported as the only natural learning path.
Mantra:
Your imagination is in your own hands. Trust your hands with your imagination.
Overall Concept:
The concept of Land Art ties well in with the Maker Movement, the DIY ethic, and with Punk.
A social movement with an artisan spirit, Maker Culture emphasises active learning-through-doing in a social environment where people are motivated by fun and self-fulfillment. Very similarly, the “do it yourself” (DIY) ethic promotes the idea of self-sufficiency: anyone is capable of performing a variety of tasks rather than relying on paid specialists. This ethic emerges in correspondence to Punk subculture whose anti-consumerist ideology seeks the empowerment of individuals and communities.
Just like Camping Culture, the core of these movements’ ideologies lies in community interaction, knowledge sharing, nature loving, sustainable development, environmentalism, health and food and local culture.

Dove:
Campeggio Sotto Il Faggio – Area Accoglienza
Quando:
13-18 agosto, dalle 15 alle 18
Procedimento:
